There aren't enough hours in the day... What to do?

It is 8:20 p.m. Earlier I glanced at the clock as it struck 4:30 in the afternoon and was astonished at the speed at which the day passed.

As a busybody, I constantly find myself amazed at the way time flies. I enjoy partaking in a number activities because I like to see how much I can accomplish and what I can learn. However, in involving myself in so many things, I often find that by the time I am through with my obligations, it's late in the day, and there still might be things left to do. On many occasions, I wish there were more hours in the day, more days in the week, which is something that can't come true. Henry David Thoreau wrote on the triviality of sleep, saying how it's not important and we should do without it, but living without sleep just isn't healthy. You need sleep to do things better, but that takes up around eight hours of the day.

I am still satisfied with what I get done with the time I have, though. I know I'm good at time management. Here are some of the things I do to try to finish things and stay on track.

  • Break up activities. This depends on how well you can stay on task. If you need breaks, make sure they are not spaced out reasonably. Don't spread them out too much, but don't let the blocks run so long that you grow unproductive. Remember: power naps aren't so bad!

  • Make goals and create a system to check them. How much do you want to finish in a day? How much time to you have to do them? Set goals and find a way to track your progress, whether it's a chart or checklist, or crossing things off in a planner (digital or paper... whatever works best).
  • Don't waste time. Try to use your time any way you can. I used to study on the bus to my classes, while I ate, and, well, in between Facebook time. It might seem excessive, so do what you think is appropriate for the amount of tasks you have at hand and what else you need to do.
  • Prioritize. Be able to analyze your tasks. Look at the big picture but also see what each one involves. How important is it really? Does it help bring you to what you ultimately want? Is this for you or someone else?
  • Find your style. Try to understand what makes you tick and how you can use that knowledge to get things done more efficiently.

Take the time to see what you need to and just how much time you have to do it. Do what makes you feel good. Don't get too overambitious, but remember that while 24 hours in a day might not seem like a lot, there is a lot you can achieve in that time.

You are so right. Time gets away so easily and before you know it the day is over. When planning my day I keep in mind that often a task will take at least half again longer than I think it will take.

I'm always running out of day before I run out of things I need to get done.

I keep on hearing that older people need less sleep: I can't wait because then I might have enough hours in the day!
