“Loving, lying, cheating, longing”… that’s the description Showtime proffers of its show “The L Word,” and it seems to be a very accurate. In the three episodes I viewed, all of which were from different seasons, there was more sex than in any TV show I’ve ever seen (though I guess I don’t watch many contemporary series). I wasn’t fond of the picture that the show painted of “lesbian culture,” and based on gay women I know and information I have read about said “culture,” I must say that the way “The L Word” makes lesbians look – promiscuous, weak, and lustful – is only in an effort to boost ratings.

Several studies, including those by Eldridge and Gilbert (1990) and Murphy (1997) have found that “long-term lesbian relationships tend to be monogamous and high in emotionality, disclosure, and support.” You wouldn’t know that from watching “The L Word,” though. In the first episode of Season 5, Shane (Katherine Moennig) and her girlfriend told the women selling them an apartment about their five-month relationship, and in almost the next scene, the girlfriend walked in on Shane and the women having intercourse with the girlfriend’s son in the adjacent room. That obviously doesn’t say much about the sincerity of their relationship.

Once Season 4 scene that struck me in particular included when a group of the characters were at a restaurant, and Kit (Pam Grier) had just had an abortion, and Tina (Laurel Holloman) revealed that she had had two in her twenties. It was such a casual conversation that made it seem as if sex with anyone at anytime was okay.

Additionally, in a Season 5 conversation when Bette and Tina were planning to divorce, Bette asked Tina how she was getting laid if Tina wasn’t with anybody. That implied to me that the women must always have a source of sex and couldn’t last “a long time” without it. That would explain why they use the word “fuck” for their relations instead of words like “intercourse” or “love-making”; their relations on the show aren’t always out of love, but more out of lust.

In just one episode of “The L Word,” I counted three scenes of sex, two of which included people who weren’t officially together. The show depicts lesbians as beautiful, sex-hungry, cheating women, and while some relationships seemed sincere, such as that between Alice and her soldier mate, the others were only temporary and superficial, which made the collective picture the show gave of lesbians rather inaccurate.

I think the show is a glossy, glamourized take on lesbians on the fast lane. I have lesbo (that's what they want to be called) friends and trust me, they do not watch the show for affirmation of whatever relationships they currently have or to see their lives depicted on TV but for hmm... shall we say "eye candy"?

In case noone has noticed, nearly any show that has good ratings is either sexually oriented or covertly sexual. Two men and a boy come to mind, very sexually contented. Maybe the only diff is they cant show the sex scenes on prime time.

By the way, I'd never heard of this show either!
