A Personal Act of Hypocrisy - Stealing!

Ugh. I feel so disgusted in myself.

I always claim to be an honest person. I have never walked into a store and stolen an item. I can be awfully blunt when asked a question about, well, anything I know truthfully.

I also claim to dislike hypocrisy.

Unfortunately, I realize now that I have fallen into both.

I was in my masters program orientation yesterday, and the director urged us to turn to the page in our handbooks about plagiarism and other prohibited behaviors. I am accustomed to ignoring this part of introductions because I have heard it several times, all throughout each of my undergrad classes. "I don't plagiarize," I thought to myself; "I always cite my work."

However, the director than began to illustrate her point with another example: "I would guess that all of you would never walk into a store and steal a shirt off the rack. For that reason, I would also expect that none of you would download a song illegally from the Internet." She then proceeded to explain how such acts result in no money for the artists, thus discouraging the creation of any creative content in the future. She continued to explain how some of her students would write papers without citing content, some so full of the writing of others that it could hardly be called their own.

When I heard the director speaking about this, for some reason, something finally clicked. I realized that though I consider myself an honest person, there are certain things that I do that are actually rather criminal, though not violent or dangerous. I would rationalize for such actions so I would feel okay with it... "I'm too poor to afford paying for this all the time," "I don't do it all the time," "I want to try it once, that's all."

I thought about my Hubs, which I have been writing for a few years. I realized that I did the same thing with my Hubs; I would borrow a little here and there to add to my Hubs and make them better, but I actually hadn't cited them correctly. I just spent about an hour going back and fixing all of those mistakes, and I can't believe I let that go for so long.

I remember once when someone alerted me to the fact that some of my writing had been copied on someone else's blog, and I was furious! I contacted the blog's owner and demanded that they throw that person out of the system, and I left a mean comment on the page. I was particularly annoyed because the writing was a personal story of mine, and the writer had changed pronouns to make it sound like he had written it originally.

However, I see now that the case was really no different than what I had been doing to so many others. Though I would name the source, I wouldn't add a URL or any real information to indicate where exactly it came from.

I feel very disappointed in myself. From now on, I am determined to cite my work correctly (not necessarily to refrain from referencing works, because it really can add to a piece... I will just work to give them credit). I also want to work to improve myself in other areas of honesty. I am entering a Masters of Administration program, and I see that I need to step up my act and clean up my behavior. My excuse before was that I'm still young, basically a kid at 22 years old, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't clean up my act, set an example, and be a completely good citizen.

How I Now Cite My Image Sources

Very Truthful! I would have to say that most of us hubbers plagerize every once in a while. Most, after realizing it would just fix their mistake. It takes a couragous person to admit to plagerizing!

Thank you for such a thought provoking Hub. We do try to give full credit, but it is difficult in a culture of copying.

Glassvisage, thanks for being honest. I think you may be too hard on yourself, though.

It's important to distinguish between copyright infringement and plagiarism. They are both good things to avoid, but they are different. Copyright infringement is copying content without permission. The key issue is permission. If you do have permission, then you are not infringing on copyright, even though you may or may not cite your source. Copyright is an economic right.

On the other hand, plagiarism is using another's work without giving credit. It is more a matter of courtesy and ethical behavior than anything else. If you cite your sources, but make a mistake in a page reference, that really isn't plagiarism. It just might be sloppy work.

Another important thing to remember is that nobody can copyright an idea. They can only copyright words in sequence or lines on a page, or a particular pattern of pixels!

Thanks for your comments! Aya, you are right: ideas can't be plagiarized! A little sense of relief :)

I think that all of us, in some point in time, whether purposely or inadvertently had committed some form of theft. I'll admit that I did "borrow" a few photos that I should have credited to the photographer. Thank you for this.

I think I subconsciously post these kinds of venting Hubs because I know there will always be nice Hubbers that will make me feel better :) Thanks Dohn!

I don't know if I agree with the illegal downloading comparison. For one, when you illegally download, you don't take the song to a record company - claim that you wrote it - and expect to be compensated for its delivery. Likewise, I think in many ways the antiquated label and distribution system of music today is trying desperately to hang onto ideas of ownership that are largely obsolete.

Anyway, I'm rabbling. But I do think plagiarism is not a worry that we necessarily "grow out" of. This makes for an interesting read.

Misterspook, the distinction you were making there was the distinction between copyright violation and plagiarism. Illegal downloading violates copyright, but it is not plagiarism.

I could make a few snide remarks about how inviolate copyrights should be, but I was merely pointing out that the director made it seem like illegal downloading and plagiarism are closely related activities. I just don't think so. Anyway, I'll quit cluttering up the comments section!

Thanks to you both for contributing to this topic! I don't think you could ever "clutter up" a comments section with comments like these :)

Glassvisage thanks for the great post. I think we all need to be honest with ourselves about what we use. To a point, everything we know we learned from somewhere else, but we tend not to give credit to where it is due. Guess we all need to look at our pages and give the credit to where we got our ideas from.

Thanks Tim. Trust me, it's much easier to say that to do! But I'd say it's well worth it :)

glassvisage I applaud you for your transparency and honesty. It is a great message for all writers. However, I tend to agree with Aya Katz. She made a valid point. If we were to give credit to each person we got an 'idea' from, our hubs would be bombarded with credits. However, parts of our article that we have quoted someone else, should be attributed to the original writer. Thanks so much for such an informative and well written hub.
